What is 24 hour ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)?

This test is used to monitor the blood pressure for 24 hours using a small recorder. It is fitted in a few minutes and is like a regular BP cuff around the arm. Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) provides a comprehensive assessment of your blood pressure profile. ABPM provides information on BP variability, overnight dipping and morning changes that in-clinic and home BP monitoring can not. The recorder is usually placed on a belt and you should not bathe or shower with the machine on. Work activities can be undertaken normally. The machine should also be kept on whilst sleeping to obtain the night time readings. Once the recording time period is up, the monitor can be switched off and the cuff removed. The monitor and cuff should then be returned and the blood pressure is then analysed on a computer. An example of a recording is shown below.
